Dear wanking part of fandom,
I hear you've got issues with The Show?
Here, have some solutions:
- stop watching,
- sell your TV,
- stop posting on LJ,
- delete your LJ,
- go cry in the bathroom,
- better yet, go sulk in your basement,
- or the really best, let us enjoy our Show in peace, please FUCK OFF AND DIE.
So-not-lovingly yours,
Me

But of course, I'm the objectionable one, right? For actually giving a damn. Right.

Date: 2008-10-17 12:29 pm (UTC)It's not about "finding so much wrong with a show". I like the show, that's the point. I'm attached to the characters, I'm interested in the mytharc, I want to find out what happens. But maybe there's something in I object to, and this is true of... just about all contemoroary media. It's actually the problem with doing media studies, I see patterns and ideologies in everything. And some of the ideologies I find in some shows (show that I like, that I watch and really enjoy) are disturbing. So, I rather than completely throwing in the towel and giving up on the show, I get online and talk about it. I read about it. I look at what other, smarter people have said about it, I add my own contributions, and I learn a lot.
Made me think "Well then, the original post made by Minniemax, didn’t apply to her at all." So I am really shocked now that you replied to it, or seemed to be upset by what she said. Because judging you on that, as I said, it didn’t apply to you or the type of person you seem to now be?
So please excuse my affront against you, while I still don’t understand why you took offence to something that was not aimed at you, I obviously took you completely the wrong way and assumed you were one of the haters who she was actually talking about.
Personally I don’t find too much misogyny or racism in this show. There are real people, in real life, just like Dean and Sam and the other characters. So when I consider that fact, it would be highly unrealistic to expect never to see it on a show I watched. Or a movie. Perhaps a more productive use of time would be to discuss the social implications of misogyny and racism in the real world that affects people daily? Or join a movement determined to stamp such things out and do something for real for the cause? And then we could get on with enjoying shows we like for the fiction they are, or avoid watching those who portray characters that remind us of traits we dislike in real people in the world?
I don’t know. My SPN anger at the moment is aimed mostly at the people who are bleating on about how Sam is raping Ruby, when that’s not even been in the show and so is not even canon or a real issue to be discussing anyway. It’s fault finding and I hate that kind of crud, it’s why I stay the heck away from fandom, it’s full of nonsense just like that. It would be a more valuable use of time to discuss or work towards helping those in the real world involved in rape or victims of it than bleating on about conjecture and guess work of a fictional television show IMHO.
So I was probably displacing my anger at that and what I perceived as an attack on my friend and allowed that to spill over onto you, when I certainly shouldn’t have. Sorry.

" is exactly what I wanted to say.
Maybe I should let you make my posts ROFLMAO

Date: 2008-10-17 12:51 pm (UTC)You know what I do for a living dont you?
I don’t find fandoms that have child sexual abuse as issues and go on about it, complaining about said show, watching it and moaning about it showing that stuff. Nor do I find a fandom and create a situation where I can shout “Child Sexual Abuse!” when it’s not even canon or written into the show at all!
Cos I'm actually actively doing something about it for real every day anyway. And that’s what you do if you honestly want to make some impact on something that bothers you. Of course you don’t have to do anything about things you care about, it’s not a staple is what I am saying, but at the very least accept that this conjecture and sharing of opinions is of no real use whatsoever to anyone and never will be.
Sure there’s a lot to be said for philosophical and educational debate, but inevitably that stuff only expands understanding, shares opinions, can sometimes help form tolerance and creates a lot of negative things to boot. It doesn’t make one edge of difference to the world though.
There's enough misery going on in the real world as it is! We don't need it spilling into our fictional entertainment that is meant to take you away from this harsh reality.
So I suggest sticking to the real world and let entertainment be just that, entertaining.

Date: 2008-10-17 01:03 pm (UTC)Did I just hear my wife say "Well that'll be a first!" ?!
Those comms that do things like that totally rock, I did know about them and I am a fan of such things. I don’t support them actively because I have other areas in my life and work that I support fully and cant give to all causes that are important or I would be even poorer than I already am. And right now I am as poor as a Church mouse who just ran out of cheese. ;)
Again, I hope you’re okay and you will excuse my earlier outburst.
