This one is especially for velvetwhip, who is a great friend and a wonderful light on my flist.

“Gone off the deep end, have you?”

The voice startled her. She turned abruptly, ready to cry out for help, and fumbled with the stake in her pocket.

“Did the watcher get you all cured?”

Spike. It was Spike… She let out a breath of relief, looking closer at him.

He looked… different. Less, but more at the same time and, sans duster, almost unrecognisable.

Questions like “How?” and “When?” were pushed aside by the more important “Why?”

She looked into his eyes, met the same look she saw every day in the mirror and the question was answered.

Remorse.
